Billund Aquaculture is a Danish company located in Billund, Denmark. They also have offices in Norway and Chile. Billund Aquaculture has built a RAS (Recirculation Aquaculture System) farm in Hvide Sande in Denmark with a capacity of 1.000 tons of 4-5 kg salmon per annum. They hatched the first fries in July 2011 and harvested the first batch of salmon in October 2013.
Production costs from egg to 4-5 kg salmon (all-inclusive): 4.9 USD per kg HOG. The economic FCR ( Feed Conversion Ratio) was 0.95.
According to the Norwegian Directorate of Fisheries, the average FCR in Norway the last 4 years is 1.29. Hence, the achieved result in Denmark proves that it is possible to save 0.34 kg feed or NOK 3 (2011) per kg salmon producing salmon in close containment system. This equals a potential saving of more than 400 000 tons of feed per annum for the Norwegian salmon industry. (2012 figures).
