Land based fish farming with water recirculation and filtration allows for the capture of valuable waste streams for energy production. Niri has developed technology that automatically captures and feeds out sludge from our tanks. This includes unconsumed feed, feces from the fish and potentially wastes from slaughtering of fish. Various technologies can be employed to produce sources of renewable energy, depending on local market pricing and demand.
Sludge and other waste products can be processed with various technologies:
- Vortex technologies – to dry and grind sludge to value added outputs
- Anaerobic digestion – for production of biogas or biofuel
- Heat and power units (CHP) – production of heat and electricity
Organic digestate is a waste product from these processes and can either be used as a fertilizer or as a substrate for algae production or horticulture production.
Production outputs of salts, minerals, and bio-processing wastes such as carbon can be transformed into high value products. Algae have a wide range of application purposes including bio fuel, health supplements and fish feed production.
In addition, horticulture of various high value plants is attractive given the high nutritional content of Niri wastes. A range of suitable plants attract good prices in the international market.
Niri can industrialize production processes for renewable energy that are integrated with fish farming technology. We have number of partners prepared to deliver integrated production concepts, or we can partner with companies that already have technology for renewable energy production in place.
